Not more than a month ago, I was discussing this with an overseas acquaintance who lives near a Volvo Plant in Europe. They too were interested in “other-than-fossil-fuel” run vehicles. Such as all-electric, hybrids running bio-diesel, and the future of hydrogen cell powered transportation. “I think Hydrogen can be a very good thing when it gets going, however by the time hydrogen fuel hits the market, is there not a big chance that batteries and solar cell tech is also ready then?”

Meaning, cars can run all-electric and keep the batteries charged and topped off with the sun. Okay so, right, then why do it at all? That is to say why make 30 million electric cars, get stuck with all those less-than-efficient batteries in landfills with all that light and heavy metal pollution seeping in ground water, when you can wait until they are viable, and you have those problems figured out? Besides by then Hydrogen tech will be viable, so invest in research, not subsidies, or tax credits to buy stuff that is not good enough yet?

Are you beginning to see the relevant arguments against such technologies, forgetting about the most important challenge – cost to the consumers, and thus, perhaps like you, my acquaintance asks; “and if so, what is best to choose? The US already has infrastructure for hydrogen, but not so many other countries I guess?” Referring of course to the reality that most US homes are piped for natural gas, which has lots of hydrogen atoms to separate out for hydrogen fuel.

Also, within 5-10 years we will have a low energy electrolysis technique and one can separate water H20 – two hydrogen atoms, release the oxygen into the atmosphere. If a country doesn’t have fresh water it’s not a viable place to live anyway, or they have desalination happening to serve those populations. Now then, I don’t wish to trash anyone’s vision for our future, but we risk killing everyone’s dream if we don’t act prudently. Plus, very soon we will have conquered another hurdle for hydrogen fuel and that is we will have carbon nano-tubes and other materials for the hydrogen fuel tanks for our future flying cars.

Talking solar tech talk is all about taking some of the seemingly never-ending and almost incomprehensible terms used in the world of solar energy and translating them into (relatively!) plain English.

When You Read, You Begin With ABC

You might begin with ABC when learning to read, but, as valuable a skill as that is, it won’t get you very far when trying to understand the language of solar energy.

But, we do need a place to begin, so how about where solar energy all begins – the sun. Sunlight hits the earth and the particles that go into the making of sunlight are called photons.

Photons form the first part of the word photovoltaic, but where does the rest come from? Glad you asked. That would be voltage or the pressure that forces electrons to travel along a wire.

What, you may ask, are electrons? They’re negatively charged particles that create a current when they move.

The photovoltaic effect, discovered by French physicist Edmund Becquerel, was the beginning of solar technology and states that when sunlight strikes certain materials, such as selenium, it causes a small charge to be generated.

This lead eventually to the creation of solar cells, which are made up of 2 silicon wafers, one negative and one positive, that cause electrons to flow out.

Several cells are wired together inside a frame made of glass and aluminium to create a solar, or photovoltaic (usually abbreviated to PV – much easier to write and spell!), panel.

Solar panels are joined together to create an array, which is what’s usually seen on rooftops.

Insolation is the amount of sunlight striking the surface of an object.

Beyond The Basics

That’s solar basics covered from the standpoint of how solar electricity is created. Let’s now look at terms used in and around solar electricity generation.

You often see the term grid used. That’s referring to the utility supplying your electricity and the means by which it’s supplied. Along with that, you’ll also see on-grid, grid-tied and grid-intertied which generally refer to PV systems connected to the grid. Off-grid refers to anyone living in a remote location, not connected to the grid, so that an off-grid, or stand-alone, PV system is one that’s not connected to the grid.

An inverter converts DC (direct current) electricity (PV panels generate DC) into usable AC (alternating current) to power home appliances, etc.

Solar batteries are mainly used in off-grid systems to store the electricity produced by the PV panels for later use.

Charge controllers regulate the flow of electricity into and out of batteries.

Disconnects are found throughout a PV system to allow various components to be connected or disconnected for safety or servicing.

Miscellaneous Odds And Ends

Just to wrap up, here are some terms that aren’t only found in solar energy parlance, but do mean something quite different when used as such.

What’s a load? Easy, right? Well, in solar speak, that refers to anything in an electrical circuit that draws power when the circuit is on.

Series? No, not television. That’s when electrical equipment is connected by joining positive to negative leads, thus increasing the voltage output.

Parallel is when electrical equipment is connected by joining positive to positive leads, and negative to negative leads, thus increasing the current, or amps, output.

Not long ago, I was talking with an acquaintance from Sweden whose friends work at a local Volvo factory there. I was told that Volvo was planning on making more models of hybrids and electric vehicles in the future. We talked about how wonderful it would be if all cars were electric. And I said; “well, if they figure out the battery deal, then I am with you, but look at the cost of lithium and REEs right now, that not a good deal.”

My acquaintance said; “You are right it is way too expensive, but due to the fact that not enough are being produced I guess?” Surely, that’s correct, but there is more to it than that really, you see, China is hoarding REEs or Rare Earth Elements for their in-country manufacturers. Other nations now also want to get in on it and artificially raise prices, same as the Oil Cartel. Indeed, these alternative energy entrepreneurs, corporations, and the nation-states with the raw materials are hardly saints.

They see money and dollar signs written all over the alternative energy sector and green-propulsion systems which are to be our future transportation by way of global mandate in the name of climate change. And unfortunately, it seems everyone in the supply chain is working to manipulate things. Perhaps you noted recently what happened with the EU carbon-trading corruption case which actually caused the halting of carbon credits?

Some point to the Enron debacle in California and tell us carbon-trading in the US will do nothing more than cause rolling black-outs, and job losses, and it will be much worse once everyone starts driving electric cars. Does this mean I should now feel guilty driving my golf cart around the community here as if I am part of the problem for leaving the fossil fuels at the gasoline station?

You see, I am not so sold on electric cars, that is until the batteries last longer, and can be recycled properly, as that appears to be a future unintended consequence. Still, I am all for efficiency and what works. Today, however we know that Oil and Coal work and are working and most alternative energy projects don’t, far too many have failed, or gone bankrupt. Often, they are not cost effective, can’t perform, unreliable, and many lead to other problems.

Does this mean I am against electric vehicles? Heavens no, but I am still waiting until a few of these challenges are conquered. Where is all that lithium coming from for the ion-lithium batteries, where are all of those exotic alloys and metals going to come from? How can the price point for electric cars compete until those problems are solved?

If someone wants to have an honest conversation about energy, environment, and efficiency, fine, but if they want to spout utter hokum, I am quite bored with all the standard arguments, guilt trips, and attempts to promote social trends, I live in the real world. We need energy, it must be reliable and at the lowest possible price for civilization to work. Not only for the electric cars we are to be driving in the future, but also for the power plants which will be producing that electricity. Please consider all this.
